Wrangler Spotlight - Alyssa Hanks

Wrangler Spotlight - Alyssa Hanks

Wrangler Spotlight

Alyssa Hanks, a sophomore from Downey, CA, has been a dominant force throughout her two years as a Wrangler.  As the starting centerfielder, Hanks has shown drastic improvement from last year to this year.  Her ability to throw girls out from her position is a huge benefit that the Wranglers have over their opponents.  Alyssa has started in 46 total games this year and is batting .405 on the season.  Hanks has a total of 66 hits, including six triples and two homeruns on the season.  As the leadoff hitter, Hanks has the ability to steal bases and score runs quickly for the Wranglers.  She has 17 stolen bases and 51 runs on the season.

Alyssa will be graduating this spring with her general studies degree, and hopes to attend a division I school closer to home where she can continue her softball career.  Alyssa wants to work with young children in the future and hopes to become a kindergarten teacher.

Q: What part of your game has improved the most from freshman to sophomore year?

Alyssa: "I feel I have improved drastically in the outfield.  Last year I didn't have the arm strength to throw girls out, but this year I have a total of 10 throw outs.  Another part of my game that has improved is my confidence.  I am more confident at the plate and in the field, and I credit that to the coaching staff for believing in me."

Q: If you could meet any athlete in the world, who would it be? Why?

Alyssa: "I would love to meet Ronda Rousey (Women UFC Fighter).  Rousey is a fearless competitor and her ability to bounce back after a loss is extremely inspirational.  I love the heart she shows every time she steps in the ring for battle, and I feel like I have the same attitude when I step out on the softball field."

Q: How has Odessa College prepared you for your future?

Alyssa: "OC has given me a sense of character.  It has allowed me to find myself and realize who I am as a person.  Since I am a long way from home, OC has made me more independent.  It has allowed me to rely on myself and trust my instincts."

Q: Why did you pick Odessa College over other colleges?

Alyssa: "I was recruited hard by Coach Cannon, and I decided to take a visit to Odessa.  At first, I knew it was going to be very different from home, but once I stepped on campus, I realized that this was the place for me.  I really wanted to be part of a small campus, where I would be able to build personal relationships with everyone I met.  OC also gave me the chance to play the sport I love!"

Q: What has been your greatest accomplishment as a softball player?

Alyssa: "My greatest accomplishment was last year when I was awarded 2nd team All Region as a freshman.  It was a great honor to be selected and it gave me the motivation I needed moving into this year."

Q:  What is it like being an Odessa College Wrangler?

Alyssa: "Throughout my two years here I have nothing but positive words to say about OC.  Everyone is so friendly here, and I truly felt welcomed since day one.  I would like to thank my teachers for working with me throughout the past two years and believing in me and wanting me to succeed in every aspect of life."

After speaking with Head Coach Joel Prickett, he stated, "Alyssa has been great for us the past two years.  Her dedication and willingness to improve has made our team better as a whole.  She is a hard worker on and off the field, and I wish her nothing but success in her future endeavors."
