In the final NJCAA basketball polls for 2009, both basketball programs at Odessa College were once again ranked in the top twenty.   This is the second straight week that both Odessa College basketball programs have been ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association polls.   Both basketball programs have completed competition and the student-athletes are currently taking final examinations for the 2009 fall term.

The Odessa College women’s basketball team concluded play during the 2009 fall term with an undefeated 13-0 record.  Last weekend, the OC women defeated McLennan Community College of Waco, Texas 76-58 and The University of Chihuahua, Mexico by a final score of 84-52.  With the unblemished record, Odessa College currently is positioned in the number thirteen spot in the final NJCAA basketball ranking for 2009.   The Wranglers are led in scoring by Takoia Larry, a first year athlete from South Bend, Indiana, averaging 12.7 points per game.  Balanced scoring has benefited the Wranglers throughout the fall as Ali Bills, Chantelle Brockett, Shon Redmond and Judith Tabala each average over eight points per contest.   Tabala, a 6-6 sophomore, who recently signed with the University of Syracuse, continues to average right at ten rebounds per contest.   The Wranglers return to action on December 28-30, 2009 in Arizona with games against Eastern Arizona College, Pima College and Chandler-Gilbert Community College.    The next home contest for the women’s team will be January 6, 2010 in a non-league battle against Clarendon College, Texas.

Odessa College broke into the NJCAA men’s rankings last week for the first time during the 2009-10 basketball season, appearing at number twenty-two in the ranking.  This week, OC breaks into the top twenty, showing up at number nineteen in the final NJCAA basketball poll of 2009.  With a 13-1 record, Odessa College is tied for the most wins in the NJCAA at this juncture in the 2009-10 basketball season.  Last Saturday evening, Odessa College concluded play for the 2009 fall term with a 81-42 victory over the University of Chihuahua, Mexico.  The Wranglers continue to be led in scoring by sophomore Josh Brown, averaging 17.2 points per contest, with Kevin Schaffartzik and Desmond Woodberry chipping in 12 and 11 points respectively per game.   Veterans Melvin Baker and Rashad Savage led the Wranglers in rebounding with nine boards per event.    The Wranglers return to action on January 1-2, 2010 in Hobbs, New Mexico with games against Cochise College, Arizona and Southwest Community College, Texas.    The contest on January 1st features two teams ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll.  Cochise College is currently 10-0 and ranked number two in the nation by the NJCAA.   The next home contest for the men’s team will be January 11, 2010 in WJCAC action against Western Texas College.
