SEASON OUTLOOK

Coach Helms returns for his 3rd season back in the driver’s seat of the Wrangler’s Basketball program after a nine-year hiatus that took him to Meridian Community College in Mississippi and Butler Community College in Kansas.  In 12 seasons at Odessa College, Coach Helms has an overall record of 307-87, including 4 National Tournament appearances. His overall career record now stands at 605-242 in his 28 years as a junior college head coach.

The 2007-2008 Wranglers squad has been recruited from all across the world. Leading the way for OC will be a talented and very hard working group of 6 returning sophomores.  With one year of experience behind them, this group of sophomores will look to provide the leadership and stability that is needed to finish at the top of the always tough Texas JUCO league.  Odessa College also welcomes 12 newcomers to this year’s team. These young men come to Odessa from winning programs all across the world, as well as many, many individual accolades!!       

Coach Helms feels confident in this team to uphold the winning tradition of Odessa College.  Helms will look to guide this talented 2007- 2008 team through the strenuous tests that the WJCAC season will provide.  With a mix of many old and new faces Coach Helms expects to have competition for every position on the court, allowing the Wranglers to play a more up-tempo and exciting style that Wrangler fans have been known to enjoy!!
 
SOPHOMORES
# 2 JAMEL GUYTON 6’2” GUARD Odessa, TX
Jamel has been a fixture for basketball in Odessa for many years.  He is now in his sophomore season with OC after averaging nearly 17ppg last season on his way to being named 1st Team All WJCAC Conference, as well as being named one of the Top 100 JUCO players for this upcoming season.  In his senior season at OHS, Jamel averaged nearly 20ppg, and led his team to the best finish in school history, while being named 1st Team All Permian Basin and All Region.  Jamel is athletic and has great ability to put the ball in the basket.  He currently holds a 3.4GPA and is on track to graduate, and add his name to the long list of OC players to move on the NCAA Division I programs.
 
#12 DELRICO LANE 6’ GUARD Greensboro, FL
Delrico returns for his sophomore year with the Wranglers after averaging 4.6ppg, 3.1apg, and nearly 2.0spg last season for the Wranglers.  During his high school years at John Carroll Catholic High School, Rico won a State Championship in his sophomore season and went on to be named 1st Team All State, and selected to play in the Mississippi-Alabama All Star Game in his senior season.  Delrico’s maturity, leadership, and will to win will provide great stability for the Wranglers.  He currently holds a 3.8GPA and is on track to graduate, and add his name to the long list of OC players to move on to NCAA Division I programs.
 
# 21 DEXTER MCMARION 6’2” GUARD Pflugerville, TX
Dexter is back for his sophomore year in Odessa after averaging 2.3ppg and 1.4rpg in limited minutes last season.  He was named 1st Team All District as well as Defensive Player of the Year in his senior season at Pflugerville High School.  Dexter has worked very hard to improve his skills, and he will be counted on to provide the tough hard-nosed defensive mentality and athleticism that the Wranglers are looking for.  Dexter currently holds a 3.0GPA and is on track to graduate, and add his name to the long list of OC players to move on to NCAA Division I programs
 
# 23 CARLOS RODRIGUEZ 6’2” GUARD Ponce, PR
Carlos comes back to OC for his sophomore year after averaging 5.5ppg and 1.9rpg for the Wranglers last season.  While representing Puerto Rico in The FIBA World games, Carlos averaged over 15ppg, while netting 27 points vs. Uruguay, and 12 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists vs. Team USA, which is made up of the best college players in America.  Carlos brings his experienced, confident style of play, and his ability to shoot the ball with NBA range back to Odessa.
 
# 32 DRAGOSLAV PAPIC 6’8 WING SERBIA

Dragoslav returns to Odessa College for his sophomore campaign after posting 8.9ppg and 5.1rpg last season.  Prior to prepping one year at South Kent School in Connecticut,   Bata, his nickname meaning younger brother, had already established himself in the states with his performances at the NIKE All-American Camp.  Bata has two of the most dangerous tools in basketball, size and skill!!  He has worked very hard this off season to improve his weaknesses to be one of the top JUCO players in the country.  Dragoslav is working hard in the classroom as well, and has his sights set on graduating, to add his name to the long list of OC players to move on to NCAA Division I programs.  Verbally Committed to Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)

 
# 33 JESSE JOSEPH 6’7” FORWARD Miami, FL
Jesse returns to the Wranglers after averaging 3.6ppg, 4.1rpg, and 1.7bpg last season while missing part of the year due to an injury. In his high school years at Miami Monsignor Pace High School, they reached the state final four 3 years in a row, while Jesse averaged nearly 12ppg and 10rpg in the always tough city of Miami.  Jesse is a very active and athletic long armed Dennis Rodman type of player, who loves to rebound and has the uncanny ability to change and block shots.  He has worked very hard in the off season to improve his skills, and is ready to make a name for himself on the JUCO scene.  With continued hard work in the classroom staying on track to graduate, Jesse will add his name as well to the long list of OC players to move on to NCAA Division I programs.
 
FRESHMEN
# 1 DEVON MCLENDON 6’4 GUARD Sharon Hill, PA
Devon arrives in Odessa following a stellar prep career at Chester High School, the same school as Jameer Nelson (Orlando Magic). In his senior season at Chester High he led his team to a State Championship, while being named 1st Team All State. Over the past few years Devon was consistently rated as one of the top prep players in the basketball hotbed of Philadelphia.  Devon is a very athletic versatile playmaker, who has a great understanding of the game.
 
# 4 RODERICK BOMBARD 5’11 GUARD Orlando, FL
Roderick is the second player to come to OC from Orlando Edgewater High School (Quintin Thornton.)  In his senior season he broke the school record for most points in one game with a 47pts, 9ast, 8stl, 7reb outing, the record was previously held by Marquis Daniels (Dallas Mavericks) and Darius Washington (University of Memphis). As well as being named 1st Team All Metro-Orlando, and 2nd Team All-State.  Rod is a smooth point guard that has a great understanding of the game.
 
# 11 ANTHONY DORSEY 6’3 GUARD St. Petersburg, FL
Anthony arrives to Odessa College from Lakewood High School, where he led his team to a State Championship in his sophomore year and finished as State Runner Up in his senior year.  In his senior season he averaged over 18ppg on his way to being named 1st Team All County and 2nd Team All State.  Anthony is an extremely athletic and explosive player that will rebound, and play “way” above the rim!!
 
# 13 TOMMIE SYKES 6’4 GUARD Drexel Hill, PA
Tommie comes to OC from Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia the same high school as Rasheed Wallace (Detroit Pistons).  In his senior season Tommie averaged nearly 14ppg, while being named 1st Team All City and 3rd Team All State.  Like Dorsey, Tommie is an extremely athletic and explosive player that attacks the rim, and will rebound and defend!!
 
# 22 TROY BLUE 6’4 GUARD Philadelphia, PA
Troy makes his way to Odessa after his senior season at Delaware Valley Charter High School, where he holds the record for most points in one game with his 49 point night.  Last year Troy averaged 24ppg, 12rpg, and 8apg on his way to being named 1st Team All City.  Troy is a very tough, versatile, and competitive player that has the ability to score in bunches.
 
# 25 JEREL BLOCKER 6’3 GUARD Lake Wales, FL
Jerel arrives in Odessa from Lake Wales High School, the home school of Amare Stoudemire (Phoenix Suns).  In his senior season, Jerel averaged 20ppg and 8rpg while being named 1st Team All County, Offensive Player of the Year and 3rd Team All State.  Jerel is a long athletic guard that has the ability to shoot the ball.
 
# 30 BRIAN DELEON 6’9 FORWARD Arecibo, PR
Brian makes his way to OC after attending Col. San Felipe School in Puerto Rico.  While competing in his age group in Puerto Rico, Brian averaged 12ppg, 8rpg, and 5bpg, while being name to the 2007 Gatorade International Championships All Star Team and Best Defensive Player.  He was also a member of Team Puerto Rico Junior National Volleyball Team.  Brian is an exceptional athlete that has the ability to rebound, defend and is a skilled big man.
 
# 41 DAMIEN WILLIAMS 6’9 FORWARD Orlando, FL
Damien is on to Odessa College after finishing up at West Oaks Academy.  In his senior season at West Oaks, Damien averaged a double-double with nearly 20ppg and over 13rpg.  After coming on the scene late, he finished his high school career rated as one of top 20 players in the State of Florida.  Damien is skilled, scores the ball well, and has great hands and footwork for his size.
 
RS STIMSON BALDONADO 6’4 FORWARD COLOMBIA
Stimson makes his way to Odessa from San Andres Island, Colombia.  Stimson has been rated as one of the top players on the island in his age group, which has produced numerous current NCAA Division One players.  Stimson is a tough, hard nosed athletic versatile player who can play inside and out.
 
RS PATRICK BENT 5’11 GUARD COLOMBIA
Patrick makes his way to Odessa from San Andres Island, Colombia.  Patrick has been rated as one of the top players on the island in his age group, which has produced numerous current NCAA Division I players.  Patrick is a smart, tough hard nosed athletic pure point guard.
 
RS DAVID BONNER 6’4 GUARD Odessa, TX
David makes it across town to OC from Permian High School after being named 1st Team All District last season for the Panthers.  David is an athletic guard who with added weight will be an asset to the Wranglers program after sitting out this year.
 
RS JUSTIN NAJERA 6’7 FORWARD Odessa, TX
Justin stays put in Odessa to wear the Blue and white after being named 1st Team All District and Defensive Player of the Year two years in a row at Odessa High School.  Justin is a very long, skilled versatile player, who with added weight will be counted on by the Wranglers after sitting out this year.
