The NJCAA’s Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) softball league was formed in 1998-99. Three teams made up the inaugural year: El Paso Community College, Howard College and Midland College. For the first five seasons the NJCAA Region V Tournament was held in Abilene, Tx on the campus of Abilene Christian University. Two teams from the three member WJCAC joined five teams from the NTJCAC for the double elimination tournament with the winner advancing to the National tournament in Florida. Odessa College joined the conference in 2001 followed by Frank Phillips College and Clarendon College in 2002. Western Texas College would join in 2003 thus making up the seven teams representing the WJCAC. Beginning in 2005, due to the growing number of WJCAC teams, Region V would split into two divisions consisting of Region V West and Region V North. The Region V West tournament was placed on a rotating basis between all conference schools. The tournament qualifiers now consist of the top four teams in the WJCAC competing for a berth in the National Tournament in Plant City, Florida.
