College: Jim
Sharp started his college career in west Texas at Odessa
Junior College after Coach Watkins recruited Sharp. Coach
Watkins became interested in Sharp after watching him
in the AJRA. Once Jim got to Odessa he made an immediate
impact, sending OC to two consecutive NIRA (National
Intercollegiate Rodeo Associations) Championships. College
was also the beginning of Jim’s professional riding
career.
Pro
Career: In Jim’s first year
of professional riding, it has been said to be his “Break
Out Year”, as he was named rookie of the year,
won the Bulls Eye Bull Riding Contest, won the most
money by a rookie, and finished fourth overall in
bull riding. Just two years after being rookie of
the year, Jim would win his first PRCA Championship.
This is the year in which Jim would also ride 10
consecutive bulls at the PRCA Finals. Jim would win
the championship two years later.
Fun
Facts: Jim’s
nickname is “Razor”. Jim is one of the
founders of The Professional Bull Riders. Jim rode
his first steer at the age of nine. In his first ride
at the age of nine, Jim was actually bucked off the
steer as the gate was being opened. Jim also sponsored
the Jim Sharp PRCA tour.
