Wrangler Spotlight - Larry Lewis
Wrangler Spotlight
Larry Lewis, a sophomore guard from Scottsdale, AZ, has been a role model on and off the court for the Odessa College Wranglers Men's Basketball team this year. The Wranglers overall record is 19-4 and they currently sit on top of the conference with an 8-2 record. Larry Lewis has been a great asset for the Wranglers as he transferred in from Division 1, UTSA, where he played a year of basketball there. Larry has started every game for the Wranglers and leads the time in minutes played. Larry is the go to three point threat, as he averages 40 % from behind the arc. On the season, Larry averages 12 points per game and three rebounds per game.
Larry is currently pursuing his general studies degree, and plans on graduating from a four year university upon graduating from OC. Larry wants to study business management, and eventually become a real estate agent.
Q: What are some of the challenges you face on a day-to-day basis as a student-athlete?
Larry: "I think the hardest challenge I face is trying to juggle everything between my school work, practice, long bus rides on game days, and a social life. Being a student-athlete is tough, but I know the hard work I have put in will only help me down the road."
Q: What have you learned about yourself at OC that you didn't know at UTSA?
Larry: "I have learned how to adapt to a different environment. At UTSA there were 35,000 students on campus. There is nowhere near that much at OC and it was a difficult transition at first. By going to a smaller school, it has allowed me to make connections with people much easier. I have been able to build closer relationships with my professors and students on campus."
Q: Do you have any role models?
Larry: "My role model is my brother because he has shown perseverance and dedication to everything he has done throughout his life. He has taught me to work hard, and good things will come out of it. My brother currently plays professional basketball overseas in Germany, and I idolize him for pursuing a dream he has always had."
Q: Who is your favorite professional athlete?
Larry: "Muhammed Ali is my favorite athlete because he is a legend and a world icon. He is someone I look up to because he never gives up."
Q: What is it like being an Odessa College Wrangler?
Larry: "I have had a great experience thus far as a Wrangler. My professors, coaches, teammates, and friends have made this journey worth it. As a Wrangler, I feel that my professors care about me and want me to succeed, and I can't thank them enough for the support they have shown me."
After speaking with Head Coach Tra Arnold, he stated, "Larry is a gym rat and is always trying to improve on his game. He always takes the time to make himself better, whether it be in the classroom or on the court. Larry does all the little things that make us a complete basketball team."
