Montana Wigfall, a second year student-athlete at Odessa College, is going to be a key component for the Lady Wranglers Basketball team this year. Montana is a 5'3" point guard from Washington D.C., and is the floor general on the court. Through four games this season Montana is averaging 4.0 points per game, 5.3 rebounds per game, and 4.7 assists per game. Montana has helped lead the Lady Wranglers to a 4-0 start.
Montana is on track to graduate this spring with a degree in general studies. She is unsure of where she would like to attend college upon graduation, but knows she either wants to go to school in New York or California. Montana hopes to continue her playing career at a four year university, where she can study sports therapy.
Q: If you didn't play college basketball, which other sport would you want to play?
Montana: "Softball was always another sport I was interested in! I played it growing up and I loved it. Softball was really fun for me, but my heart was always set on basketball.
Q: What part of your game has grown from last year to this year?
Montana: "I think I have developed leadership skills that I didn't have last year. I was afraid to speak up, but now I try to be vocal every day and lead by example. I also feel like my conditioning has improved drastically. It has allowed me to be quicker in the open floor."
Q: What has been your greatest accomplishment as a basketball player?
Montana: "In high school my team won the State Championship! That was one of the most exciting days of my life and it is a memory I will never forget."
Q: Who is your role model? Why?
Montana: "My Dad has always been my number one supporter and he has always pushed me to limits that I thought I could never get to. He has been by my side through every aspect of my life, and he has been a great role model for me.
Q: If you could be any professional athlete who would you be? Why?
Montana: "I would be Serena Williams! She has become the face of women's tennis and completely dominates the playing field. She is a beast on the court and is a true inspiration for me."
Q: If you could play for any college/NBA coach who would you play for? Why?
Montana: "I would love to play for the Maryland Terrapins Head Coach, Brenda Frese. I love her style of coaching and the way that she runs her teams."
Q: What has your experience been like as an Odessa College Wrangler?
Montana: "I have nothing but great things to say about OC! I was scared at first to move down here because it was so far from home, but I fell in love with OC the minute I got here. OC feels like home to me because everyone is always so friendly and helpful!"
After speaking with Head Coach Ara Baten, he stated "Montana has done a great job of making herself into an outstanding student-athlete for our program. Her work ethic, consistency and attitude have been a great example for our younger players in the program and I am very excited about having the opportunity to work with Montana for the remainder of the season."
